The first Guinness Eye Hospital was built and commissioned in Kaduna in 1963, coinciding with the official opening of the company’s first brewery in Ikeja, Lagos. Following on from its success, and to ensure that more Nigerians benefit from easy access to quality eye care, the company went on to establish similar eye hospitals at Onitsha in 1984 and Lagos in 1992. The Guinness Eye Centre Lagos, is located within the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and the Guinness Eye Centre, Onitsha operates under the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital.

The Guinness Eye Hospitals provide ophthalmic services to people from all parts of Nigeria and beyond and train medical students, resident doctors, nurses and community health officers, with examinations for national and international Ophthalmology degrees taking place within the Lagos centre. The Hospitals have been accredited by the West African College of surgeons for postgraduate training in Ophthalmology and the national post graduate medical college of Nigeria.

In 2018, Guinness Nigeria supported the purchase of an Optical Coherence Tomography machine for the Guinness Eye Centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). It is for diagnosis and monitoring of common blinding eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetes Maculopathy/ Retinopathy childhood eye cancer, Retinoblastoma and Age-related macular degeneration and also donated Five Million Naira (N5, 000,000) to Guinness Eye Centre Onitsha for the ongoing renovation works.

Our interventions in the eye centre through the years have enhanced the centre’s capacity to provide high quality eye care services to Nigerians as well as its capacity to train eye care professionals.
